The Julia Dent Grant Tent was formed to honor the memory of the wife of Ulysses S. Grant. Julie Dent was born in St Louis, Missouri on January 26, 1826 and married on August 22, 1848. At the time, Ulysses S. Grant was a lieutenant in the Army.

Julia Dent Grant was a devoted wife and mother who remained near her husband during much of the Civil War.
