Salome M. Stewart Tent #55 was instituted June 12, 1950. Her son, Dr. Henry Stewart, was a guest of honor at the instituting of the Charter. At the ceremony, Dr. Stewart gave a brief history of his mother, who served as a nurse during the Battle of Gettysburg, commencing her duties on the first day of the battle. In 1860, prior to the war, Salome had been a school teacher with a provisional certificate.
In 1901, Salome was honored by the National Membership of Nurses' Organization, for her service in the Civil War, and was pensioned by that group.
