Madaline Gilbert Tent #23, located in Sharon, Pennsylvania, was organized in April 1923.
Madaline Gilbert, the heroine for whom Tent #23 was named, was born January 21, 1849, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
At 13 years of age, Madaline was too young to take an active part in the Civil War, but she worked diligently making lint bandages and other supplies. For three years she nursed and helped in the care of the sick and wounded Union soldiers. Later she herself became an invalid.
She met and married Samuel Gilbert of Co. D., 17th Ohio, 9th Vol. of the Civil War. To this marriage five children were born, one of whom was Frank Gilbert, a future mayor of Sharon.
