HISTORY OF TENT #21

Several Daughters of Union Veterans decided to form a local Tent and a search was made for a name. Ann Hawkins Gentry's name was proposed and accepted. Members from Tent #16 and Tent #20 met in Columbia, MO for the purpose of instituting a new Tent and installing >officers. They were Ruth Funck, Pat Volkmann, Betty Streicher, Charlene Konnersmann, Joy Leistritz, Sue Ladage and Sue Inman. Charles Funck and Paul Leistritz also attended. The meeting was held 25 June 1994 at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall in Columbia, MO.

Members of our Tent have been active in civic affairs; among them are:

participation in Christmas at Maplewood in period costume, 1994;
dedication of the plaque commemorating the 27 September 1864 Battle at Centralia in 1994
the reenactment at Nifong
the 1995 reenactment in Centralia
guides at the Jefferson City Cemetery
and placing a wreath in honor of Civil War Veterans at the Boone County Courthouse
Caroline Lacey has prepared an excellent paper on the furnishings at the Historic Maplewood Home

Many of our members are active in the Columbia Regional Library, the Missouri Historical Society, the Boone County Historical Society, the DAR, the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, and other lineage groups. Some members participate in the Mid-Missouri Civil War Round Table. They meet every month, alternating between Columbia and Jefferson City. Members of the Round Table are very knowledgeable about Civil War Battles and the meetings are very interesting.

Some members of the Ann Hawkins Gentry Tent are grandchildren of Civil War Veterans:

Betty Bakich, whose ancestor was Enoch Hunt
Alice Faye Cross, whose ancestor was George Brentlinger
Caroline Lacey, whose ancestor was John Emory Bryant
Josephine Morrow, whose ancestor was Andrew J. Garlock Marjorie Roberts, whose ancestor was Henderson Southard Ruby Thompson, now deceased, whose ancestor was Allen Crews Crane

Some of our guest speakers have been:

Sue Puckett, who gave an interesting talk on authentic clothing & patterns from the Civil War era
Nancy Thomas, who told about newspaper research at the State Historical Society of Missouri
Phil Woolfolk, who spoke on Civil War history and honored us with several Civil War songs
Dr. Gary Vroegindewey, who displayed a fascinating collection of Civil War slides and old photographs.

Some of our goals are to promote an interest in Civil War history, to see that the history is accurately recorded, to act as a guide for proper displaying of flags, and to record our ancestor's Civil War activities.

We would like any female that has a direct line Civil War ancestor to become a member. We meet once a month. Our meetings for 1996 have been held at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall and at the Maplewood Home on Nifong.
