HISTORY OF TENT #20

Daughters of Union Veterans Organize & Elect Officers

A year of ground work and advance preparation culminated in success on August 1, with the organization, in Kahoka, of the Charlotte Harrison Boone tent #20 of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

It all started in June of 1989 when Patricia Mullenix met Mary Ann Thorpe of Interlocken, Michigan at a Danville, Illinois reenactment. Mrs. Thorpe mentioned her membership since childhood but said she had never attended a meeting. Her mother had enrolled her and kept her dues paid.

Joining Mullenix in this effort was Jan Gross and Sue Inman. Many contacts were made and work began with prospective members verifying their descent from a Union Civil War Veteran.

June 30, Mrs. Ruth Funck and husband, Charley of St. Johns, Missouri and Mrs. Bessie Smith of St. Louis met at Kahoka with prospective members. These two ladies are members of Julia Dent Grant Tent #16 of St. Louis.

Funck is the president of the Department of Missouri. Smith is the past National President of D.U.V. They explained the necessary verifications accepted for proving descent from a Civil War Union Veteran.

The date for presentation of the charter was set for August 5. The charter will be open until Sept. 5, 1990. After the closing of the charter, membership will be by enrollment through lineal descent from a Union Veteran.

This tent is active in service projects such as placing over 2000 American Flags on graves of Veterans from all wars each year prior to Memorial Day. Not only do we also honor our Confederate graves in northeast Missouri, but we contribute money to Southern organizations to help fund flags that they place on our Union Veterans buried in the South.
