Funeral and Burial Practice
The practice session for the funeral
and burial of Corporal John Peyton Byrne will be on April 23, 2005.
The Keokuk Area Convention and Tourism Bureau has given us permission for
this at their 18th annual Civil War event at Rand Park, Keokuk, IA.
It is listed on their schedule for 4:00 p.m. on the battlefield near the
medical tent area. The practice will begin when the medical demonstrations
are finished. This is open for all to come and watch.
Those in the practice will be:
-
John Avery with his hearse. (John will also have his embalming
tent set up with the medical)
-
The 5th MO. Cavalry
-
The Grand Army of the Republic representatives practicing
their open grave service.
-
The Nephews and 21st MO.Inf. descendants as pallbearers
practicing loading and unloading the empty wooden coffin and the folding
of the flag.
-
DUVCW Tent #20 practicing their closed grave service for
Veterans.
-
Honor & Color Guards, Escorts and Sentries.
-
Lads & Lassies strewing rose pedals.
-
Buglers
-
Guardian Angel Film Services (This will be part of the
documentary film)
Practicing ahead of time allows those
in the services time to work out any problems. It also gives others
a chance to see close up a preview and announcing of when this actually
will be happening. And most important of all, we will be prepared
for when Corporal Byrne's cremains arrive in Memphis, MO. in May.
DUVCW Tent #20 will have a table set
up to pass out flyers and talk to the public. They will also have
the commemorative t-shirts and memorial cockades available to purchase.
The sale of these items and donations are what is funding the expenses
of this funeral and burial event.
James Country Merchantile will
be set up in the Sutler area. They will be helping those needing
garments for the event. They also have the black crape needed for
all to show proper mourning. http://www.jamescountry.com/
