Corporal John P. Byrne's
Comrades

The beginning of this page was inspired by Dean Cunningham.  He has saved through the years a handful of photos collected by his G. Grandfather, Sgt. John Henry Cunningham.  Some were marked with names and information while others were not.  Some we recognize by face or name to be 21st MO. Inf. soldiers.  Others you may recognize and be able to help us out.  Those of you that have studied uniforms, backgrounds, CDV embellishments and other details, your input is most welcomed.  If you have pictures of 21st MO. Inf. soldiers and would like to share them with others on the page, please send them to webmaster@duvcw.org  Please include any information that you have about the soldier.
Dean has also consented to be the coordinator for descendants of 21st MO. Inf. soldiers.  The list has begun and is growing as the word gets out.  You may correspond with him prior to the funeral and burial dates through this email address misterc4you@comcast.net  Our hope is for descendants to be able to acknowledge themselves and their ancestor and share their stories.
I will list a reference number under each photo for easy use in discussions.

Sgt. John Henry Cunningham
#1
John enlisted in the 2nd N.E. MO. Home Guards on July 15, 1861 as a Private in Co. G. under Capt. Morrow and served till Oct. 7, 1861.  He mustered into the 21 MO. Inf. Co. D. on Feb. 1, 1862 at Canton, MO. as a Sgt.  His expiration of term was Feb. 11, 1865.
John carried the first to die in the Regiment from the fields at Shiloh. TN.,
the 20 year old Hugh Shirkey of Co. D.

Major Edwin Moore, 21st MO. Inf.
#2
Edwin came over as a Lt. from the 16th IL.  T.W. Holman of Rutledge, MO. also has his name on the back side perhaps he borrowed this picture for possible inclusion in his 21st. MO. Inf. "Historical Memoranda" book compiled by him and N.D. Starr and published in 1899.  Having checked the book, Edwin's picture is not in it.

Lt. Charles C. Morrey, Co. D, 21st MO. Inf.
#3
Charles was one of 58 soldiers of the 21st MO. Inf.  that were captured on April 6, 1862 in the "Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh, TN.  By then he was a Sergeant and ended up at Libby Prison.
He was exchanged at Aikin's Landing, VA. in the fall of 1862.

Gem tintype considered to be of Robert Cunningham circa early 1800s.  He is the father of John Henry Cunningham.  Robert and sons John Henry, Harvey and Robert Morris all enlisted as Privates and son Wilford enlisted as 2nd Lieut. in the 2nd N.E. MO. Home Guards on July 15, 1861  in Co. G. under Capt. Morrow.  Father Robert and son Wilford served to Feb. 1, 1862 while sons John Henry and Harvey served to Oct 7, 1861 and then served with the 21st MO. Inf.   Robert Morris was captured on July 20, 1861. He and Wilfred then went on to enlist in the 50th Reg. Enrolled MO. Militia.  A battle had incurred on the family farm where upon his son Robert Morris Cunningham was killed. Robert Morris Cunningham's papers read:
"Killed by Guerillas, Aug 22nd 1862".

The following photos that were in the collection, do not have any identification of name or Unit.  Perhaps you can figure them out.

#5
Presumed to be from a Cavalry Unit with shell jacket and cav boots.  Notice that this photo was probably taken by a "field" photographer since this soldier is standing on dirt and there is a painted canvas backdrop.  Do you have a picture with this same backdrop?  Would be great to find the location that it was taken at or by what photographer.

      #7                              Edwin Moore
Notice that this CDV has the same decorative frame as Edwin Moore's has.
This #7 may well be a 21st MO. Inf. soldier.

From the left #9, #10, and below is #11.

To search for a Missouri soldier visit this web site: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/
Results are best obtained by typing only the last name, since many used only intials for first and middle names.  This will bring up all possibilities.  Also under Conflict use Civil War in the drop down menu.  When you find a possibility, click on the "view details", then scroll to the bottom and click on "view record".
