 Battle Hymn of The Republic

The hymn was born during the American Civil War, when Julia W. Howe visited a Union Army camp on the Potomac River near Washington, D. C. She heard the soldiers singing the song "John Brown's Body" and was taken with the strong marching beat.  She wrote the words the next day.  Click here for more information.

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor

Early in the Civil War, a medal for individual valor was proposed to General-in-Chief of the Army Winfred Scott.  However, Scott felt medals smacked of European affection and killed the idea.  Click here for more information.
